May 21, 2008 - Dallas, TX - Enthusiasm was in the air at the 59th Southeast Theatre Conference (SETC) in Chattanooga, TN. SETC, being the largest and most active nonprofit regional theatre organization in the country, recognizes that theatre is a means through which the human community can come to celebrate and express itself.

“We’re the best at what we do,” said Betsey Baun, Executive Director of the Southeastern Theatre Conference. “Our mission for the Conference is to connect people in theatre to opportunity.”

The Conference was jam packed with opportunities, activities, and attendees from the world of theatrics. For four days more than 4,300 attendees from all over the country were able to hear from three keynote speakers, select from 300 workshops, participate in five theatre festivals each representing different productions, engage in playwright contests, interview with top companies searching for backstage technical crew members and performers and browse the exhibition hall for companies representing commercial, educational and training markets. The Conference featured a new “Tech Mixer” opening event and also featured a Design Reception Awards Ceremony.  Class act performers, Aerial Dance With Fabric, provided entertainment prior to the Main Awards Banquet, which was the closing event.

Mike Collins, South Region Sales Manager for Entertainment Technology, delivered the welcome message to the attendees of the first ever SETC Tech Mixer which was sponsored by Vari-Lite and Entertainment Technology. The Tech Mixer was open to all attendees who work or study in any aspect of design or technical theatre.

“The technical group of attendees needed a way to get involved in the conference and then network with each other during the week,” said Thommy Hall, Vari-Lite Southeast Region Sales Manager. The Tech Mixer successfully united this group of more than 400 attendees and set the stage for them to feel like a small niche of the Conference.

The Design Reception and Awards Ceremony, co-sponsored by Vari-Lite and Entertainment Technology, awarded undergraduate and graduate students for lighting design, scenic and costume design and also for technical/crafts. Three top industry designers, Kevin Adams, Jennifer Caprio and Todd Rosenthal, critiqued the entries.

Vari-Lite VL3500™ Wash luminaires and VL1000™ Spot luminaires lit the act Aerial Dance With Fabric while the troop performed suspended from the roof of the rotunda.

VARI*LITE® automated luminaires helped to set an enjoyable mood for the entire conference. “Each year the theatrical energy and ambience grows,” expressed Baun. SETC exclusively used VARI*LITE® fixtures, including, VL1000 AS luminaires which lit the Design Reception and Awards Ceremony and VL1000 AS, VL2500™ Spot and VL2500 Wash luminaires lighting all staging areas. Entertainment Technology Marquee™ consoles and Bak Pak™ dimmers provided control and conventional dimming for the Conference.
