On May 24, 2009, the Mardan Palace in Antalya, Turkey, opened its doors for the first time with a two-day gala event featuring a multimedia showcase and live performances from world-renowned artists Seal, Mariah Carey and Tom Jones.  At the helm for the event was lighting designer Jon Aasen of Desk Black Out and assistant lighting designer Theo Cox of TCLD.  To support their vision of the perfect lighting design to illuminate the inaugural event Aasen and Cox chose to utilize 126 VARI*LITE® automated luminaires including 22 VL 2500™ Spot, 22 VL2500™ Wash, 20 VL3000™ Spot, 18 VL3500™ Spot, and 44 VL3500™ Wash luminaires all provided by PROCON Belgium.

“For the opening ceremony of the Mardan Palace, we have a two-day event with the official opening production on the first night and then two additional concerts to follow,” stated Aasen.  “Lighting plays a huge part in the overall feel of the entire event.  It is absolutely essential in every way.”

During the opening event, Aasen was faced with a particularly distant challenge as in a large throw distance for the lighting fixtures to overcome.  His challenges were to light approximately 100 meters of hotel façade from a distance of up to 100 meters away plus keep the concert lighting fresh and unique.  Coupled with the necessity to maintain powerful and consistent light output from all the lighting instruments, this is why Aasen chose VARI*LITE automated luminaires.

”I knew that lighting about 100 meters of façades from about 100 meters away would require the use of predominately VARI*LITE fixtures.  I had to have both quality and power. Quality because onstage we have international stars and they have to have the best.  And power because I needed to cover 3 façades of the hotel with color and texture for the opening ceremonies.  When you have to have these two elements in your lighting rig, your rig has to have VARI*LITE luminaires.”

As the opening ceremonies kicked-off, all the VARI*LITE luminaires were put to work.  The VL2500 Spot and Wash fixtures were focused on the stage to light the performances.  The VL3000 Spot and Wash luminaires were put in charge of maximizing and highlighting the architectural elements of the world-class hotel.  The Vl3500 Spot luminaires were placed around the 16 m x 8 m stage provided by StageCo and used for aerials and audience lighting throughout the concerts.  And then the VL3500 Wash luminaires pulled double-duty providing both aerials for the performances and capitalizing on the zoom range for architectural lighting throughout the event.

“All the VARI*LITE fixtures were put to work from the beginning of the event.  Actress Sharon Stone and Seal hosted the official opening ceremonies with Seal performing one song.  Next, we had a fantastic multimedia show orchestrated by Patrick Awouters of Laser System Europe, which was a mix of video, lighting, sound, pyrotechnics, lasers, and stage performers.  Then we concluded the event with concerts from both Tom Jones and Mariah Carey.  Throughout its entirety, I was most impressed by the sheer power of the VL3500 Wash and the precision of the zoom mechanism inside the VL3000 and VL3500 Spot fixtures.  In the show we used a lot of blue and red color palettes.  The color-mixing in the VARI*LITE fixtures is so good there is no other alternative out there.  Plus the quality optics for gobo projection from all the VARI*LITE fixtures is simply outstanding.”

At the end of the event, partygoers and dignitaries all went their separate ways, possibly never to reunite, but that is not the case for Aasen and VARI*LITE automated luminaires.

“When I use VARI*LITE luminaires I know they are going to give me exactly what I am looking for, and that is why I always choose Vari-Lite.”
