The prestigious Reykjavik City Theatre is set to deliver new dynamic lighting options to designers of its varied program of productions with a brand new installation of VARI-LITE VL1100TS luminaires.

Head of Lighting Thordur Orri Petursson comments that, “After a shoot-out between VL1100 TS and other brands in the venue, it was decided that the VL1100 was the most suitable product to take the brunt of the FOH lighting.”

The VL1100 TS offered a variety of strengths that made it a must-have for the Theatre, but as Petursson said, “The deciding factor was the CYM color-mixing, the number of gobos it can hold, and the overall size of the fixture.”

Icelandic sales and rental company Luxor supplied the lights. Luxor Sales Manager Alfred Sturla Bodvarsson oversaw the installation along with Petursson and respected Philips Vari-Lite trainer Coral Cooper, winner of the 2010 Knights of Illumination Lifetime Achievement Award.

The choice of VARI-LITE luminaires was an obvious one for the City Theatre team. “We have a number of VL1000AS units for top lighting above the stage, so we were comfortable with the reliability of the VARI-LITE products and also the excellent level of local service,” commented Petursson.

The Reykjavik City Theatre is a busy repertory theatre situated in Iceland’s capital city. Its productions include the whole range of classic to contemporary drama, and it is the home of the Iceland Dance Company. The 11,000 square meter building has four stages, with the main stage seating 560. It has dedicated lighting, sound and set building departments and services most of its production in-house.

For such a busy environment, the VL1100TS offers freedom and reliability, as Thordur Orri Petursson explained, “Reykjavik City Theatre received a grant from Reykjavik City (its main backer) to replace the majority of standard theatre spotlights with automated tungsten fixtures. This decision was taken to reduce the number of fixed fixtures required in the FOH position, to reduce focusing time in a repertory environment and to add flexibility in programming.”

“The VL1100TS is ideal for this kind of theatre environment because of its 50kHz drive system, which significantly reduces the noise of motor operation,” comments Coral Cooper. “Along with its automated functions including CYM color mixing, rotating gobos and variable diffusion, plus the automated four-blade shutter mechanism, the VL1100TS is a great workhorses for both on stage and front of house positions.”
