INDUSTRY SPEAK: WHY BUILD QUALITY IS WORTH THE COST

In our "Industry Speak" series, experts talk about changes to the entertainment lighting industry, including trends, technologies, and other concerns vital to members of the live event community.

Build quality is one of those things that’s easy to hand-wave away.

“Sure, sure. Yours is ‘better.’ But this one works, and it’s cheaper. If I save $1,000 a fixture, that adds up quickly on a large order.”

That’s not wrong. It’s easier to look at two fixtures with similar-sounding specs and go for the one that’ll save room in the budget.

But what about next year’s budget?

    THE QUESTION BEHIND THE QUESTION

Most in the lighting industry know Vari-Lite, and there’s a reason for that.

It’s not just the history. There are many brands that were hugely influential in their industry at one point, only to disappear into obscurity twenty or thirty years later.

But Vari-Lite continues to be known, because Vari-Lite continues to be used.

Sometimes, it’s fixtures that are older than the techs using them, but they’re used.

Think about that for a moment.

In an industry obsessed with what's next, why are fixtures launched years ago still showing up in rental inventories, theaters, television studios, and concert productions?

The answer isn't nostalgia. It's value.

Why does the industry continue to use these fixtures? Because Vari-Lites last. Designers trust them year after year.

    THE VALUE OF THE WORKHORSE

At Vari-Lite, we have nothing against innovation. We’ve been leading true innovation since we invented the first moving head.

But a new fixture doesn’t necessarily mean innovation. Replacing the fixture from three years ago with a slightly brighter version is hardly groundbreaking. It’s just more money spent on different gobos and different color mixing, with a new DMX map to learn.

And more waste for the trash heap.

At Vari-Lite, we take a different approach. We don’t chase the trend-of-the-week or make new products for new products’ sake.

    We make workhorses.

When Vari-Lite makes a fixture, we design a general-purpose tool that has solid capabilities and is quality made.

We don’t get into spec battles or what my old boss would call “red connectors vs. green connectors” conversations. We focus on the capabilities that matter—and we do them well. Year after year.

The result is a fixture designed not just for this year’s production, but for years of productions to come.

THE VL2600 SE: A CASE STUDY

Few fixtures illustrate this better than the VL2600 Profile. Originally released in the spring of 2018, the VL2600 Series is one of the most successful Vari-Lite fixtures ever produced. Today, it can be found in rental inventories, theaters, television studios, houses of worship, and corporate event environments around the world.

From North America to Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, the VL2600 has been deployed across virtually every major entertainment lighting market and application.

That kind of adoption doesn't happen by accident. Of course, LED technology has advanced since 2018, even as the overall mechanics of how this class of fixture works have remained largely the same.

To keep the fixture relevant, Vari-Lite upgraded the VL2600 Series with a new light engine that significantly increased output without compromising light quality. The result was the VL2600 SE Series.

With the upgraded engine, the VL2600 SE remains competitive with modern moving head profiles, even though it was released years earlier.

Competitors have launched three or more variants since the VL2600 came out. Yet the VL2600 remains a fixture designers specify, rental houses invest in, and productions trust.

That's not because the industry stopped innovating. It's because the VL2600 continues delivering value.

And that’s why, when you compare fixtures over their entire lifecycle, the question changes.

It's no longer "How much did I save?"

It's "How much value did I create?"

    That's why build quality matters.

    That's why longevity matters.

    That's why quality pays.
