    TECH TALKS: DMX vs. DALI for Lighting Installations

    In our "Tech Talk" series, we break down the technologies and protocols shaping entertainment, architectural, and building-wide lighting control.

     

    While it's common to compare DMX and DALI, the two lighting control protocols weren't built to compete with each other. They're designed to solve two very different problems. DMX is a dynamic-lighting protocol. As such, it prioritizes the needs of fixtures that change color, intensity, or position independently, in real time. DALI is a static-lighting protocol designed for a commercial building, made to adjust dimming for daylight, respond to power outages, etc. And so it prioritizes the needs of large-scale installations that are controlled together and send continual feedback.

     

    That distinction is the reasoning behind all the various technological differences between these two similar, yet markedly different control protocols.

     

    DMX is built for real-time control: anywhere lighting is doing more than illuminating a space (concerts, theatrical productions, color-changing facades, lobbies, feature walls, themed environments, or any moment where the fixture itself is part of the experience). DALI is built for operational efficiency: the static, everyday lighting that fills the rest of a building (offices, corridors, classrooms, and other places where diagnostics and reporting matter more than speed).

     

    Most large projects end up using both, because most buildings have zones that need each: operational spaces that call for DALI, and feature spaces that call for DMX.
